National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is a compulsory test for students seeking admission to National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai.

Both NISER and UM-DAE CEBS were set up by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India in 2007. Their mandate is to train scientific manpower for carrying out cutting edge scientific research and for providing input to scientific programmes of Department of Atomic Energy and other applied science institutions in the country.

Both these institutions offer 5 year integrated MSc programmes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Those successfully completing these studies at NISER are provided a certification degree by ' Home Baba National Institute'.

Totally there are only 200 seats.  

Leading professors, science scholars from Centre for Excellence in Basic Science functioning under the ambit of Department of Atomic Energy, an autonomous institution, functioning under the Centre.

With just 57 seats, the 150 year old Mumbai University provides the certification for those completing this 5 year integrated MSc programme.

Students who are completing plus two and those who have already completed can take up the NEST examination. Its mandatory to have obtained 60 % pass in plus two common exams. Students who have great interest in Physics and Chemistry should take up this exam.

NEST 2021 will be conducted in around 90 cities across India.

SC/ ST and OBC students have reservations based on the Government's mandate.
