Harvard University declared winners of World Universities Debating Championship 2014- 6-Jan-2014
Chennai: Winners of the prestigious World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) held at Rajalakshmi Institutions were announced.
The championship which was inaugurated on December 28th, 2013 came to a close on January 3rd, 2014 with the announcement of winners after a week long strenous and intellectual battle of words.
The winners of WUDC are:
· Harvard University from USA (Josh Zoffer and Ben Sprung-Keyser) in English as a primary language category
· Berlin University from Germany (Dessislava Kirova and Kai Dittmann) in English as a second language category
· Bandung University from Indonesia (Vicario Reinaldo and Fauzan Reza Maulana) in English as a foreign language category
In what can be termed as a huge milestone for Indian students, IIT Bombay, broke through the knockout round of Worlds, and was shorlisted with 32 other leading universities including Stanford, Yale, Melbourne, Monash, to name a few.
Glasgow, Cambridge, Sydney, Lund, BBU, Belgrade, Warsaw, Tubingen and New Economic School were the other universities that competed in the finals.
Dr. Thangam Meganathan, Chairperson, Rajalakshmi Institutions said, “Kudos to the winners and the good fighting spirit of all the partcipants. This championship has provided the opportunity for Indian youth to interact with their global peers. My hearty congratulations to the students and the organising team for ably rolling out this event.”
Dr. B Chandra Mohan, IAS, Commisioner of Labour, Government of Tamil Nadu said, “I congratulate -Rajalakshmi Institutions, for putting in great effort in bringing this championship to India. With WUDC 2014 being held in India, Indian debating will see a big breakthrough in the international scenario.”
Previously, WUDC 2013 was held at Berlin. The championship, WUDC is to be held in Malaysia in 2015.
