Punjab Govt inks MoU with PGIMER- 6-Jan-2014

Chandigarh: The Punjab government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) to further develop and strengthen the super-speciality cardiothoracic surgery facility at the Amritsar Government Medical College.

The MoU was signed by Vinni Mahajan, Principal Secretary of Medical Education and Research of Punjab Government, and Yogesh Chawla, Director of PGIMER-Chandigarh, an official release said here today.

It said the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Amritsar hospital, though have space and infrastructure, is short of qualified surgeons and anaesthetists.

The PGIMER, which is a premier institute, is fully equipped and performs all types of open heart surgeries. It has enough expert manpower to contribute and help develop and start the facility of open heart surgery at the Government Medical College in Amritsar, the release said.

As part of the MoU, the expert team from the PGIMER will visit the Government Medical College periodically to help strengthen the infrastructure, equipment and arrangements to rectify any shortcomings and help start conducting open heart surgeries so that the people of Punjab get the benefit.

This arrangement is likely to go a long way in reducing the burden and the waiting list at the premier institute in Chandigarh, the release stated.
