Extortion of excess fees from Engineering students- 4-Nov-2008

Font Size :

Recently the government has directed the self-financing colleges to collect only Rs.32,500 from those  students allotted seats in B.E., B. Tech courses selected through counselling. Complaints have come that this is set aside by most of the self-financing colleges as they demand an additional amount of Rs.30,000/- or even more.

Based on the marks in the plus two public examination the students during counselling choose any standard college recognized and approved by AICTE. They are required to pay the prescribed fee only; they have to pay more only if the course selected is approved by the AICTE.

There are many allegations that many of the colleges collect more fees from the first year students  than the one prescribed by the government.

Most of the colleges in and around Coimbatore fix nearly Rs.80,000 for admission in the first year, giving reasonsthat they have fully furnished hostel and well equipped lab and research facilities.  The students obviously suspect that it is merely an eye-wash with regards to the fee-prescription.

The parents silently suffer and they feel fish out of water because to give a written complaint to the higher authorities is inviting trouble, as it is likely to spoil their education as well as their  career.

The Government and the University say that they would certainly take steps against those erring colleges if written complaints are lodged.  The Department of Higher Education knows pretty well that the parents would certainly not give written complaints against the managements.

The students selected through counselling for B.E., B.Tech., courses in the self-financing colleges and having completed their first year have paid an enhanced fees in some engineering colleges.  The natural fear of the parents is whether the Government’s prescribed fees is for the first year only.

The self financing institutions also make hay while the sun shines,as there is nobody to question them. The students are in a dilemma,  to be or not to be there. Their ultimate fear is whether they have to pay the same amount for the second year also.

The double standard of the Government, on the one side to collect the fixed fees and on the other, to remain blind to the exhorbitant fees collection made by certain self financing institutions, drive the students infer that the Government policy is a fake.

When enquired, Mr. Radhakrishnan, the Vice-Chancellor of Coimbatore Anna University said: “There are accusations against a few  engineering colleges that they collect additional fees.  But, there  are no written complaints.  So, if the parents meet me in person and give complaint, we will certainly take rigorous action against the concerned engineering college”.
