Indian Foreign Service IFS is considered to be the best, challenging field.  Only a few get the opportunity to join in this service.

At present, Indias relationship with important nations has become significant.  Progressed countries like USA, Russia, China, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Brazil and South Africa show interest to go hand in hand with India.  Indias relationship with the neighbour countries is developing in such a way that both the countries have mutual benefits.  The vital reason for this is said to be the IFS officers only.

For the past few years, the youths eyes were on the IT field only.  Now, because of the economic regression, this status has changed.  Once again there is a big welcome to the Civil Service jobs.  The IFS service provides opportunities to know about various countries, societies, people and their culture.  Because of  the scope to serve internationally, a person gets a very broad vision.  These people get different opportunities to serve in foreign countries as well as Chief Secretariats.

Moreover, they have scopes for creativity and literary activity.  They have many privileges also. They get a handsome salary as well as furnished, comfortable quarters.  They have the responsibility to plan the foreign policy to reach the objectives of the country.  The IFS officers plan the foreign policies in such a way to resolve the current problems with the other countries and aim at long term objectives.

They have important role not only in the Ministry of External Affairs but also in the Ministries of Commerce, Finance, Industries and Defence.  Hence, the IFS Officers have important responsibility in almost all the fields.  Statesmanship is immensely necessary to conduct the dialogue.  The IFS Officers carry on the dialogue and discussion with the Government of that country where they serve.  This is a job accepted by all and quite noteworthy at the national level.

IFS personnels get job opportunities in UNO, UNESCO, UNHCR, World Bank, Center for Human Rights, Commonwealth Secretariat and SAARC Secretariats.

These officers are sent to renowned universities of the progressed countries.  This job provides them a chance to work with the dominant leaders of the world as well as the scientists.  One can become an IFS officer through the Civil Services examination.  Through the Civil Services Examination only, officers are selected for the IAS, IPS and IFS services.

At first, the preliminary examination is conducted.  Those who clear this examination alone can take up the second level exam.  Essay type questions are asked and only graduates can appear for the Civil Services Examination.  Compared to the IAS / IPS jobs, the number of persons selected for the IFS is quite less. A maximum of 20 persons get selected for the IFS service. To become an IFS, one must be placed within the first 100 ranks.
