India is a country with very ancient culture and civilization. Many of the ancient monuments of our culture are well preserved in Indian Museums throughout India. Hence, the Central Government decided to establish a unique institution wherein studies related to the collection of the rare reliques of the past, their preservation and protection will be offered.
At start in the year 1983, National Gallery of Modern Art offered certain courses. Later, these courses were transferred to National Museum, Delhi. In the year 1989, National Museum Institute was inaugurated. Still later, a separate institution, by name, National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology was begun. It was a unique institution offering Museum related courses. Within a few months of its initiation, the status of Deemed University was conferred on it.
NMI is the only institution in India to offer courses on Museum. Even now, it functions inside the National Institute. It does not have a separate building or hostel facilities.
NMI is now involved in constructing a new campus with all facilities at Noida. This institute functions under the Central Ministry of Culture. It regularly publishes books on Indian Culture and Indian Museums.

The duration for any Diploma course is only five months. Each Ph D course has only four seats. There are twenty-five seats in MA Art History. There are fifteen seats each in other courses. The medium of instruction is English.
Those who have completed their course here are sent to various Museums for interim training, for which they receive Rs 6000/- pm as salary.
