Forestry is a science-based course that covers all aspects related to conservation of wildlife, agroforestry, forest management, nature and resources.


Undergraduate Course: B.Sc., -Forestry and B.Sc.,(Hons) Forestry / Four Years


Qualifications: Must have passed Plus 2 with at least 50% marks in Science stream.


Syllabus: 'Forestry' syllabus covers subjects including Agriculture, Geography, Zoology, Statistics, Microbiology, Anthropology, Horticulture, Biochemistry and Industrial Microbiology.


Educational Institution: Forestry College and Research Institute located near Coimbatore. Affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the college offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D courses in Forestry. Apart from this, various government and private educational institutes across the country offer this.


Opportunities:


Forestry graduates can join government jobs in wildlife and forestry. Employment can also be found in national parks and sanctuaries, environmental conservation and wildlife conservation projects. Also, forestry graduates can work in NGOs.


A forester is responsible for the conservation of resources including forests, wildlife, and water bodies using advanced technologies. It is noteworthy that the central and state governments are implementing various schemes for such safeguarding purposes. Among these, there are opportunities for researchers and educators.


Opportunities are also available at Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Institute of Forest Research, Institute of Environmental Rehabilitation and Institute of Community Forestry. To work as an officer in the forest department, one has to write the UPSC exam.
