The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), was started in the premises of Prabhat Studio, Pune, Maharashtra in the year 1960.
It has been functioning from the year 1961. It is an autonomous institution working under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It has been a leading institution of India that provides studies related to cinema from the time of its inception. It initially functioned for from Delhi providing trainings related to television programme production. It was later merged with FTII in 1974.

Here, the subjects are taught in English. The films taken by the students of FTII have been selected for the film festival in India and other countries, and obtained several awards. Addur Gopalakrishnan, Balu Mahendra, John Abraham, subash Gjhai, Mahesh Bhat, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Santhos Sivan, Asrani, Jaya Bachan, Shabna Azmi, Nazurudeen Shah, Om Puri, Mithun Chaktrvarthi, Amrish Puri, Razool Pookutti were some of the leading Indian cinema artists who were former students of this institutes.
It is essential to write an entrance test to join in FTII. Students who pass the entrance text would be called for an interview. FTII also conducts four week Cinema Advertisement programme, in association with National Film Archive of India. Individuals from various industries can participate in this. In that case, good films could be screened at the national and global level.
