Kochi: A girl has challenged the unusual dress code of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) proposed to curb cheating during the All India pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) on July 25 at the Kerala High Court.

Among other things, the CBSE dress code, which had drawn widespread flak, prohibits head scarf in the examination hall. The girl, Nada Rahim of Olavakkode in Palakkad, has alleged that this dress code imposed by the CBSE is against the requirements of her religion. On July 9, the CBSE issued a set of instructions for students appearing for the AIPMT retest, with information on the new dress code.

According to the petition, girls are supposed to wear either half-sleeve shirts, T-shirts or kurta with pants or salwar. No exemption has been granted for Muslim students to wear purdah, the petition said.

It has been observed that the CBSE’s decision regarding the dress code, which is claimed to prevent copying, is irrational. The petition is being filed as she, who wears purdah due to religious reasons, apprehends that she won’t be allowed to appear for the examination. She is demanding that the new dress code should be withdrawn. Despite the strict dress code raising many a eyebrow, with a section of the people condemning the idea as it hurts religious sentiments, an unrelenting Board had stuck to its decision of implementing its ultra-strict measures. While some opine that the CBSE is going overboard with its unusual safety measures to cover up its failure to check cheating, the Board, on the other hand, deems its dress code to be necessary.

It may be noted that a paper leak scandal forced the apex court to nullify the test conducted earlier in May and order a retest causing much inconvenience to the students and their parents alike. Hence, the Board has decided to implement harsh measures to nab tech-savvy candidates, who with the aid of micro devices, indulge in malpractices.
In its latest webcast, the CBSE reiterated that it stands firm on its decision of implementing a strict, and very unusual, dress code for the retest. For the retest, which is scheduled to be conducted on July 25, the Board has instructed the candidates to come in half-sleeve light clothes. Shoes, earrings, nose-rings, scarf, belt and watches, among others, have been banned.

The candidates will be frisked and torch lights will be used to check for micro devices planted in candidates’ ears, it has been reported. Further, as the candidates are prohibited from bringing pens and watches, they will be given pens and clocks are on the way to the exam centres. What more? It has been reported there are also plans for metal detectors to be supplied to every exam centre as well.
