Students on indefinite fast demanding appointment of teachers- 23-Sep-2015
Kothamangalam (Ker): Accusing government of neglecting their demand, students of a school in a tribal dominated village today began indefinite fast in front of the District Education Office here seeking adequate number of teachers.
Launching the agitation, two students Yadu Krishna and Sandhya K, supported by their schoolmates at the Government High School, Mamalakkandam, said they would continue their fast till the government appoint adequate number of teachers.
Salma Pareed, member of the panchayat ward in which the school is situated, has also joined the strike, police said.
The students alleged that they were in a "complete dark" as there was not a single teacher in the High School to give them classes.
"Not a single teacher has been posted at the school, despite representations given to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb. We are in complete dark. We are concerned about our future. Contract teachers who were posted left as they were not given salaries," the agitating students said.
Talking to PTI, Kothamangalam DEO Leena Ram shared the concerns expressed by the students and said their demand is genuine.
Ram said the matter has been reported at the highest level and hoped that a favourable decision would be taken soon.
Students said they were not able to continue their studies as there was no other high school in the vicinity.
Hearing that the students have launched agitation in front of DEO office, people cutting across party lines flocked to the venue to express their solidarity.
