Blind student creates history by qualifying JRF test- 1-Oct-2015
Shimla: 22-year-old Umesh Lubana has created history by becoming the first blind candidate of Himachal Pradesh to qualify Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) Test conducted by the UGC.
Lubana, pursuing an M.A. in political science, is a student of Himachal Pradesh University and has cleared the test in general category.
Prof Ramesh Chauhan, chairman, department of Political Science congratulated Umesh, who celebrated his success by distributing sweets.
Chauhan said that Umesh has proved that no dream is too big while another teacher Bharti Sharma appreciated his talent and hard work and, "he is a source of inspiration for others and has a very bright future," she said.
Hailing from Kolar, a remote village in backward Sirmaur district, Umesh gave credit for his success to his teachers, mother Kamlesh Kumari, father Daljeet Singh and class fellows who, he said, had supported him at every step.
He also thanked those students who work as amanuensis for him in writing examinations and said that, "After passing out class 9th, I was totally in dark and was convinced at that time that it was not possible for a blind student to continue his education."
"At that crucial time, Dinesh Sood, a teacher of Shamsher High School, Nahan became a messiah for me and due to his motivation, I continued my study and secured 81 per cent marks in 10th and 12th class examinations and 74 per cent in B.A.", said Umesh.
Earlier, he had qualified UGC NET test in his first attempt in December 2014 and now JRF.
Umesh rued that, "There is no facility for the blind students in schools, colleges and Universities in the State.
"We need computers with talking software in the libraries along with digital books and other assisting devices but no college or University has subscribed to e-journals for us and we have to face not only difficulties but humiliation at every step," he said.
