'Fake' video triggers a twitter war- 3-Mar-2016
New Delhi: An allegation that a close associate of HRD Minister Smriti Irani had circulated some videos of JNU students, which were later found to be doctored, became the centre of a raging war on twitter.
The HRD Minister's office also distanced themselves from the person saying she was not associated with them in any official capacity.
While there were many tweets alleging that the minister's associate had circulated the doctored videos, there was an equally vociferous group defending her saying she was being unfairly targetted by some parties in order to hit at the HRD minister.
A Delhi government-ordered forensic probe of certain video clippings of the controversial JNU event has found that two videos were "manipulated" where voices of persons not present in the clips were added.
It is learnt that out of seven videos sent by the Delhi government to the Hyderabad-based Truth Labs, two have been found to be tampered with while the rest were authentic.
According to the allegations on twitter, some of these videos had been circulated by the person closely associated with the minister.
When contacted, HRD ministry officials said the person, against whom allegations were being made was not associated with them in any official capacity.
"Last year the said person had been offered a three months job as consultant with the ministry. Certain norms related to academic qualification were also relaxed to allow her to take the job.
"However since she did not accept the offer, naturally even if she has circulated anything in her personal capacity, it is a closed chapter for the ministry," the official in the Irani-led ministry said.
