Parents alert: Exam fear increases mental stress-

Font Size :

A recent study revealed that 10th and plus two students studying for final common exams were coming under enormous stress, fear of failure and had suicidal tendencies. Parents too undergo several health problems due to children’s action, say Psychologists.

During public final exams, students put in all their effort in a final bid to score good marks in taking off to an affluent career. Government, corporation and private schools conduct special classes even during pongal holidays and Sundays.

Most of the schools complete the prescribed portion before November and start revision by December. Students come under severe mental stress since both parents and teachers drive them to study hard in-order to score good marks. As a result, an increase in number persons seeking the help of psychiatrist was found since they had severe complications.

Speaking on this critical issue Dr. Moiddin from ‘Life Clinic Foundation’, Kovai told:

“Most parents are bothered about the future of their children, but are not worried about their mental state. They always keep telling their children to study. After being free with friends, when the students are suddenly forced to study all the time, they are unable to accept it and find it very difficult.

This, forces them into severe mental depression. Even the elite students are also caught with mental depression as they start to fear about failure. As a result of this mental depression, some students even get diabetic complaints.

Some are not able to tolerate and feel they are a misfit, when they are compared with other students in studies, teachers scolding in front of other students and classmates ridiculing.

Hence, to seek others attraction some even go to the extent of abusing themselves with sharp instruments, banging head on the wall, shouting unexpectedly and some even try to jump from lofty places. Some involve in bad behavioral patterns in public too. Seeking pleasure, they again fall in love affairs and sex. Some symptoms of mental stress during exam days are headache, vomiting, sleeplessness and diarrhea.

All of a sudden, some parents show too much interest in their children’s studies putting in excessive restrictions just to show-off to other parents and friends. Such action would only develop hatred towards parents and studies. Some students confide that they get highly frustrated with their parents.

When children get poor marks, parents too lose their self-respect among their colleagues and worry too much to get ailments like mental depression, diabetic, blood pressure and cardiac related problems. It would be good to take the child to a psychiatrist and sort out the problem through counseling if the child is not interested to study.

Taking the child to a psychiatrist would probably lead to other complications due to some tablets. Many students have benefited through some specific therapy that involves no medicine”, told Dr. Moiddin.

What are the parents supposed to do?

'Do not consider children as race horses. You alone are responsible for the present state they are into. Must have developed their intelligence right from 6th standard. Should not suddenly curtail them. Avoid scolding and threatening in front of others. Stop comparing them with other children. It is important for the parents to understand the children of present age and their mentality', told Dr. Moiddin
