National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI)is a premier research institute located at Karnal in the state of Haryana. Research activities to international standards are carried out in this educational institution on milk production and other products.  

This institution was established in the year 1923 at Bangalore as Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Later, it was renamed as Imperial Diary Institute in the year 1936. It was in 1955 that the educational institution was shifted to Karnal in Haryana. This institution gradually developed to be recognized as a Deemed University in the year 1989.

Here, research activities are being carried out in various areas like milk production, cleansing and treatment of milk. Dairy technology covers various procedures involved in milk production, preservation and distribution.

It is an engineering study that covers sciences like biochemistry, bacteriology and nutrition. Students here learn about various means of milk preservation and bring forth quality milk without affecting the taste.

Dairy technologists also learn about bacteriology, chemistry, physics and engineering that is required for the dairy production and other dairy products. Dairy professionals need to learn in detail about the process of reproduction for improving milk production.             

Researches are carried out in the alterations that are found in quality and quantity of milk due to intake of food and living environment.

Dairy technology course was started for the first time here in the year 1957. So far the this institution has brought out 2000 diploma students, 1,174 UG students, 1903 PG students and 873 PhD students 

As for as job opportunities are concerned, dairy technologists can obtain jobs in both government and private sectors.  Job opportunities are also available in milk dairies, cooperative society, village banks and milk production units. Primarily dairy technologists are wanted in the quality control department.

Persons willing to be self-employed can start miniature milk production and ice cream production units. However, it is good carry out your own business after working for few years in some establishment.  After completing studies in dairy technology it is also possible to join as lecturer in education institution or work in the field of research. Apart from working in dairy related establishments, students of dairy technology do have the opportunity to work in medical institution and other related institutions. Apart from getting jobs here they also get several opportunities to work in other foreign countries.
