Chennai: Henceforth, age will be no more a restriction to study law in Tamil Nadu, according to a recent order released by the Government of Tamilnadu.
Accordingly anyone who has cleared the plus 2 examination can study the law without worrying about their age from this year onwards.
Those who have cleared the plus two examinations can now join the course for LLB, which is 3 years course and BL LLB, a five year course in the respective colleges in the state. People upto the age of 100 can join the course and study the law.
However, earlier for joining the five year course the age limit was restricted to 20 years, while a restriction of maximum 30 years of age was imposed for studying for BA LLB courses.
Based on the orders of Punjab and Haryana high court, Indian Bar Council removed the earlier age restrictions, allowing all to pursue the law courses.
Consequently, Madurai High court quashed the order that the Tamil Nadu government passed on ‘no age restriction’ in 2016. However, bar council moved the Supreme Court that annulled the case. Following which the Bar Council brought ‘no age bar’ into action.
Against the order of the Bar Council, Rishab Thugal along with two more persons filed a petition in the Supreme Court in Sept 2016. While enquiring the petition, the Supreme Court stayed and provided an interim order that 'no age limit' for studying law.
