Desirous to become an IAS? - (Part - I)-

Mr. Sylendra Babu, IPS provides here the details about the Indian Civil Service Examinations.  He also shares with us some of his personal experiences as a Police Officer.


It is essential to possess certain eligibility to write ICS exams conducted by UPSC.


1) Nationality - The applicant must be an Indian citizen. 
2) Age - as on 1st of August must have completed 21 and have not exceeded 30 years of age on that year.


(II) Relaxation of age:


1) The SC/ST candidates are provided with a relaxation of 5 years in their age limit.  They can apply upto 35 years of age. 
2) The OBC candidates have a relaxation of 3 years in their age limit.  They can apply upto 33 years of age. 
3) The Ex-servicemen are given a relaxation of 5 years in their age limit. They can apply upto 35 years of age.


Note: Only the Matriculation Certificate or Higher Secondary Certificate is accepted for age proof. 


(III) Minimum Educational Qualification


The applicant must have obtained UG degree in any university.  Those who have written the final semester of UG exams can also apply.  But, must have obtained degree when writing the second part of the ICS exams. Those who have obtained professional degrees like MBBS/BDS/BE can also apply. 


(IV) How many times the exams can be written?


It is appreciable to pass the Indian Administrative Service exams in the first attempt itself. A person can join the service at an early age and accomplish great things.  Generally, they are permitted to appear for the exams for four times. However, the OBC applicants are allowed to appear for 7 times. 


The SC/ST candidates can write the exams any number of times until 35 years of age.  It is necessary to make use of every opportunity to the fullest.  It would be considered as an attempt even if appeared for preliminary exams. To appear for  just one paper in the preliminary exams is also considered as an attempt. Hence, if you feel that the preparation for the exams is not sufficient, it is better to avoid taking the exams. 


(V) Physical requirement:


In the Indian Administrative Services, for Police services the minimum height requirement for male is 165cms and for female is 150cms. For the SC/ST candidates the minimum height requirement for male is 160cms and for female,145cms. In normal condition the chest size for males must be 84cms and 70cms for females and in expansion must be 5cms more.   Physically handicapped candidates cannot become an IPS, but can join the services like IAS, IAAS and IRS. 


(VI) Fees:


There is not much fees required to pay for this. It is enough to pay the fees of Rs.50/- and the SC/ST candidates need not pay anything.


Let us now see about the ICS exam.  This exam consists of 2 parts. 


They are:


1) Civil Services Preliminary Exams - Those who pass this can take up the next stage exams. It is obligatory to pass this objective type exam.


2) Civil Services Main Exams - It comprises a written exam and an interview.  Those who pass this exam are placed in service in various divisions.
