Most animals with vertebrae are found to have teeth on their jaws. It helps them to eat, defend themselves and adds beauty to the face.
Dental science deals with health problems affecting the mouth, teeth, gums and other soft tissues of the oral cavity. Professionals working in this field are called dentists. Dental science is a part of a study known as Stomatology dealing with health problems of mouth.
Dental studies: BDS, (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) apart from being taught fundamentals of medicine, it also comprises of one-year internship training. Certain complicated problems of teeth and mouth can be rectified only through surgeries.
Dentists diagnose diseases related to teeth with help of x-rays. Damaged, decayed teeth are repaired with a mixture of mercury or ceramic. Dental problems can lead to other troubles elsewhere in the body and nerves, especially severe headache and also the other way round. Dental study also equips to handle many intricate issues of the teeth.
Dental study covers several specialized branches comprising not only study related to teeth, but also associated with several different branches of science. Dental study consists subjects like Biochemistry, Non-clinical physiology, anatomy, dental materials, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, dental histology and embryology.
Dental Public Health: It is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than individuals.
Endodontics: It is one of the specialties of dentistry that deals with the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding root of the tooth.
Oral Medicine and Radiology: Treating of dental problems after diagnosing it through x-rays.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery: Is the surgery to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.
Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the study and treatment of improper biting, which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw .
Preo-dontics: It relates to diagnosis and treatment of health problems related to the gums and tissues around the teeth.
Pedontics: Treating of dental problems of children is related to this science.
Prostho-dontics: Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.
Conservative dentistry and Endo-tontics: It is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the conservation of teeth in the mouth with help of ceramic composite, ultrasonic and air water coolant.
Dental Anesthesiology: It is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the management of pain through the use of advanced local and general anesthesia techniques.
Oral Biology: Research acitivites are carried out in the field of dental and Cranio Facial Biology, which is facial upliftment.
Cosmetic Dentistry: Cosmetic dentistry, is comprehensive oral care that combines art and science to optimally improve dental health, aesthetics and function.
Geriateric Dentistry: It deals with the study of identifing and treating the dental problems of aged persons.
