Desirous to become an IAS? - (Part - III)-

Do you know about Indian Police Service (IPS)? Are you interested to join in it?


It is necessary to write and pass Indian Civil Service exams. Every year, this exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission. Those who get selected are placed in Indian Police Service and 21 other administrative position. 


A Few of  them are:


1) Indian Administrative Service
2) Indian Foreign Service
3) Indian Police Service
4) Indian Audit and Account Service
5) Indian Customs and Central Excise
6) Indian Revenue Service, Group-A
7) Indian Postal Service
8) Indian Railway Traffic Service
9) Indian Railway Accounting Service
10) Indian Railway Personal Service
11) Indian Information Service.


Every year 350 vacancies are filled in the above-mentioned services including 40 IPS positions. 


Planning for the exams


Central Administrative Exams are conducted in 2 parts.


1) Civil Service Preliminary Exams: Those who pass this exam only can write the main exams.  The questions for this exam are in the form of objective types.


2) Civil Service Main exams: It comprises a written exam and an interview. If you pass this exam, you are sent to administrative positions of various segments. 


The application for the above mentioned Preliminary exams is issued in the month of December every year. The exams are conducted during the month of May in the subsequent year. For those who have successfully completed the Preliminary exams, the UPSC itself sends an application form to write the Main exams.  It should be filled in and sent across. The exams towards this will be conducted in the month of October and the interview, in the month of April.  The results are announced in May the same year


The UPSC application forms are available in all the Head Post-offices.  An application can be used only once. The announcement of the examination dates is made in the 'Employment News' weekly, during the first week of December every year. A model application form is also available along with it. The filled-in application should be sent to Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi. The pasted application cover should bear the script 'Civil Services Exams (Preliminary)' on the top. 


A person should not send many application forms mentioning various centers and different desired subjects. The applicant must carefully fill-up and send the application form as mentioned in the 'Employment News'.


The application form for the Preliminary exams must be sent before the 1st week of January.Through the acknowledgement card sent, it is possible to ascertai the receipt of the application form. Application form for the main exams are sent to you, if you successfully clear the Preliminary exams.  The last date to send the filled-in application will be mentioned in it. It is not possible to get back the application form once sent.
