Bhubaneswar: Faced with agitation by students, Orissa government has postponed all even semester examinations of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) scheduled to commence on  May 3, official sources said.

The students are demanding scraping of NFT (not fit for technical education) system from the examination procedure in which any student getting less than 4.5 SGPA (semester grade point average) in first, second and third semesters is declared.

NFT and has to quit BPUT at the second year. The system was started in consultation with IIT, Kharagpur and NIT,! Rourkela and of the 50,000 students of BPUT, nearly 250 students would be affected by NFT, university sources said.

Apprehending a major student unrest, the state government held several rounds of talks with varsity authorities and students for an amicable solution.

While BPUT Vice-chancellor O N Mohanty claimed that the NFT system was aimed at maintaining a standard, students opposed it.

Final year students have, however, condemned the postponement of semester examinations saying it would affect their career.
