Minerals with unique qualities are termed as Metallurgy. They are usually good conductors of heat and electricity. Metallurgy is a domain of materials science that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their intermetallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are called alloys.

It is also the technology of metals. It comprises of activities like extraction of metals from minerals, utilization of the metals and carrying out researches.

Extraction: Extraction is the practice of removing valuable metals from an ore and refining the extracted raw metals into a purer form. In order to convert a metal oxide or sulfide to a purer metal, the ore must be reduced physically, chemically, or electrolytically.

Alloys: Common engineering metals include aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, titanium and zinc. These are most often used as alloys.

Production: In production engineering, metallurgy is concerned with the production of metallic components for use in consumer or engineering products. This involves the production of alloys, the shaping, the heat treatment and the surface treatment of the product

Education institutions offering metallurgy courses:

1. IIT, Chennai (www.iitm.ac.in)
2. NIT, Tiruchi (www.nitt.edu)
3. Anna University, Chennai (www.annauniv.edu)
4. PSG College of Technology, Kovai (www.psgtech.edu)
5. Government Engineering College, Salem (www.gcesalem.edu)
6. IIT, Mumbai. (www.iitb.ac.in)
7. IIT, Kanpur. (www.iitk.ac.in)
8. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. (www.bhu.ac.in)

Job opportunities:

Job opportunities for those having completed metallurgical engineering are bright. A recent study by the Indian government revealed that out 2.20 lakh metallurgy engineers would be required before the end of 2020. Apart from this, it is also possible to work in private companies involved in metallurgy production and sales like Ashok Leyland, J.P Industries, Larsen and Toubro Ltd, Mahendra, TATA steels and T.V.S.

In the beginning it is possible to get Rs 40,000/- as salary. After obtaining enough experience and exposure it is an excellent industry to provide salary upto Rs 1 Lakh.
