New Delhi: Throwing light on the education of children in Palestine, UN Refugee Welfare and Advocacy (UNRWA) Education, chief, Jordan, Professor M B Menon said schools kept Palestinian kids out of reach of religious fundamentalists.

Delivering a lecture on 'Educating Children in a Fragile Environment-Palestine Context' at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) here, Professor Menon said, ''UNRWA run schools encourage children to attend school 365 days to keep them out of the clutches of religious fundamentalists.'' Chaired by Professor K R Srivathsan, IGNOU Pro Vice-Chancellor and organised by IGNOU School of Education, the lecture also focused on the problems faced by UNRWA in the region.

''The major problem facing the UNRWA is coverage and quality of education. Children with special needs, with stress and trauma are not being covered through the education programmes,'' Mr Menon said.

He added that subjects like Arabic and Mathematics were problematic for children and the issue of violence in schools also needed attention. ''Palestinian children are extremely motivated about education. They think it will provide them a way out and get them to US and a better life,'' he shared.

He emphasised that UNRWA was using education as a recovery programme for Palestinian children. The UNRWA was started by the United Nations 60 years ago to take care of problems of refugees.

In the Palestinian region, it is providing elementary education till 10th standard with a strong emphasis on vocational and technical programmes.
