Personal interview:

The results of the Main exams are released in the month of March.  If you obtain required marks in written exams, you will be called for the Personal Interview at New Delhi. A Board comprising a Chairman and 4 members conduct the Personal Interview. The questions will be based on the subjects you have studied now as well as in the Degree course. The Personal Interviews in general are framed in such a way to assess whether you are fit for public service in future.

Apart from the questions to test intelligence, questions related to the current affairs may also be asked. The Personal Interview is encased with an intention to identify the potentials of the individual such as, awareness, observation, decision-making, managing skill, mental aptitude and integrity. The Interview will not be like an interrogation, but rather like a casual conversation.

Let us take the example of Mr. Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of Britain who answered smartly during a conversation.

Nancy Aster: If I were your wife, I would have mixed poison in your coffee.

Churchill: If I were your husband, I would have drank it.

Personal Interview is not to test the General knowledge. They would have discerned it through the earlier exams. Through this Interview, apart from knowing your views on the Optional subject, they will also try to catch your views about the events happening in your state as well as outside the state. They will also test the candidate’s understanding of new discoveries and new philosophies that attract youngsters.

The Personal Interview takes place in Delhi during the month of April, May. Hence, choose simple clothes suitable to the summer climate.  A male can wear dark pants and light colour shirts. It is not wrong to wear a tie. Black belt and shoes are likely to give a smart appearance. Ladies can wear light colored cotton saris. This is just a suggestion, but the final decision is yours. The UPSC announces in the month of June the list of successful candidates. The final mark list is calculated as given below:

If you happen to score high marks, you are placed first among the 350-selected candidates in the list and if you score low marks you are likely to be placed in the last position.   Those who score high marks opt for IAS & IPS. If you are in the top 120 and belong to OC, in top 200 ranks and belong to OBC and in the top 250 ranks and belong to SC / ST you are likely to get a chance in the Indian Police Service. If the ranking is below these places opportunities are obtained in Indian Revenue Service and other similar divisions.  But, if the ranking is still further low and you still prefer only Police services you can join the Police service in Group B division and will be posted in the places like Delhi, Andaman, Lakshwadeep, Daman Diu and Hawelli.
