Tiruchirappalli: The proposed Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappali, (IIM-T) would start functioning from coming academic year on a temporary accommodation, according to a top official of Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department.

A high-level team, comprising Union Human Resources Development Additional Secretary Ashok Thakur, IIM-Bangalore Director Professor Pankaj Chandra and CPWD Additional Director  Ravi today inspected various sites here for the temporary accommodation.

The team, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Higher Education Secretary K Ganesan and District Collector T Soundaiah, visited buildings at BHEL campus, the National Institute of Technology, Anna University and the Bharathidasan University.

Parts of the NIT and Anna University premises could be utilised for the IIM-T and a decision would be taken after obtaining the consent of Vice-Chancellors of the institutions, who are out of station, Ganesan told PTI.

The Centre was keen on starting MBA courses at the new institute from the coming academic year, he said.  Asked about faculty, Ganesan said IIM Bangalore would initially be guiding the formation of the new IIM. Central PWD sources said a 200 acre site between Bharathidasan University and Anna University had been identified for housing permanent structures for the IIM.

Union HRD Ministry in 2007 decided to set up six IIMs during the 11th Five Year Plan. The new IIMs are to be located in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkand, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.
