PANAJI: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) to be set up in Goa will offer courses in mechanical, electronic and civil engineering in its first academic year.

The NIT is set to begin operations from the academic year 2010-11 and will have 30 students in each of the three streams, sources informed.

As per directions of the Union human resource development ministry, a committee headed by the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK) chief Sandeep Sancheti recently visited the two sites shortlisted by the state as temporary locations for the NIT. Sancheti has approved both as being fit to start operations from.

Accordingly, the NIT will temporarily begin functioning from the new academic year either from the Goa College of Engineering at Farmagudi or from the state polytechnic institute at Altinho.

NITs normally offer an array of 20 or more basic and specialized engineering streams, but it has been decided to offer only the three streams at the NIT in Goa because of the current limited infrastructure.

The Goa NIT was earlier set to admit 40 students in each of the streams, but the intake has been cut to 30 in each stream due to infrastructure limitations. The decision was taken by the central committee after reviewing the facilities available at GEC, Farmagudi and the polytechnic institute at Altinho.

The state has been hunting for 300 acres of contiguous land to set up the permanent structure for NIT Goa and the government was keen on a location in South Goa. According to sources, the directorate of education has offered a suitable plot at Sanguem. The land which is already owned by the state government is likely to solve the issue of a permanent location for the institute.

Before the Centre could grant an NIT to Goa, students had to travel outside the state for higher education in engineering. In view of this, director for technical education Vivek Kamat, recommended to the Centre that the NIT in Goa be made operational from the academic year 2010-11 itself, though the state's efforts to locate a permanent plot for the NIT are still on.
