Some of the universities in Germany is very ancient and holds renowned traditional background, with some dating way back to 15th and 16th Centuries. Several Masters programmes and most of the PhD programmes are offered in English. Many public Universities charge a nominal amount of 1000 Euros per annum as tuition fees for most of the International Master Programmes. Average cost of living is about 5.5 lakhs per annum. Furthermore, scholarships are also available for research programmes of different types.

Most popular courses / programmes:

Master Programmes in Biotechnology, IT / Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Business Management etc. and Research Programmes in various fields.

In general, a consistently good academic record right from school final exams is the main criterion. Certainly good knowledge of English needs to be another necessity to apply for the International Degree programmes (A TOEFL or an IELTS Score is normally expected). Besides this, a student could prove real interest in the concerned subject through papers presented at seminars / workshops, writing articles for science journals, project completed, any industrial training undergone as part of course and so on. Some Universities also require a GRE/ GMAT score as part of admission criteria.

After completing a course, a student can stay back upto 1 year and search for a job. There are no campus placements at German Universities. Students have to search for jobs through their individual efforts. There is no special quota for international students and they have to compete with German students as well as students from various other countries.

Every University offering International programmes has an International Students Office/ International Office which co ordinates all the activities of International students. The students get assistance on various aspects right from the time they send their application.

There are two intakes per year, April (Summer semester) and October (Winter semester). Each University offers a few courses beginning in April and most courses begin in October only.  For an October-beginning course, the deadlines to apply could be anywhere between January and July. Similarly, for an April- beginning course, last dates to apply are spread over the period September- January.

In general, to apply for any course, one must start preparations at least 9 months before the commencement of course.
