In earlier days, English literature and Mathematics were considered as the courses of higher order. Social Work course was considered as one preferred by those who have no other go. Nowadays the scenario has changed completely. Social Work has gained a coveted position for itself.
Social work is a professional and academic discipline committed to the pursuit of social welfare,social change and social justice. The field works towards research and practice to improve the quality of life and to the development of the potential of each individual, group and community of a society.
Social workers perform interventions through research, policy, community organizing, direct practice and teaching. Research is often focused on areas such as human development, social policy, public administration, program evaluation and international and community development.
Social workers are organized into local, national, continental and international professional bodies. Social work, an interdisciplinary field, includes theories from economics, education, sociology, medicine,philosophy, politics,psychology.
Varieties of Social Work :
Clinical Social Work : Psychotherapy and counseling work in psychological and mental health care settings or large companies.
School Social Work : Providing emotional help and counseling to school children by discussing and educationg on issues like drug abuse, alcholism, sex related problems, etc.
Psychiatric Social Work : Dealing wih disturbed children and teenagers with behavioural problems by assessing and diagnosing their problems and facilitating a treatment process.
Criminology and Correctional Social Work : Dealing with prisoners in remand homes to prevent crimes and anti-social behaviour.
Medical Social Work : To help patients and their families in coping with stress and other personal and economic problems.
Community Organisation : Dealing with prolebms like lack of housing, unemployment, local service etc.,

Job opportunities : Both governmental and non governmental organisations ( NGOs) offer number of jobs. International organisations too offer good opportunities to them.
There are large number of Industrial and commercial units that look to hire Social Workers.
International agencies like WHO offer promising positions to experienceed people but most of the time such jobs are based on contracts.
