Chennai: Pachaiyappa trust, which runs the 167-yr-old Pachaiyappas College for Men will be starting an engineering college in the coming academic year to fulfil its founder Pachaiyappa Mudaliar's dream of providing quality higher education at low cost.

Mr Ishari K. Ganesh, chancellor of Vels University and an alumnus of the college, said it was the great visionary Pachaiyappa Mudaliar who started the group of institutions way back in 1842 to provide quality education free of cost to downtrodden and poor students.

'Today, after the new board of trustees assumed charge in our first meeting, we decided to follow in the footsteps of Pachaiyappa Mudaliar in providing quality technical education at affordable cost to poor and downtrodden students. We will immediately start paperwork for the engineering college and get clearance before the next academic year starts,' he said.

Pointing out that Pachaiyappas college and its group institutions lacked proper infrastructure, Mr Ganesh said the new board of trustees would be initiating action to put suitable infrastructure in place and give a facelift to the various institutions.

'There are about 121 faculty posts lying vacant for a long time as the trust board did not have members due to some litigation. I assure that we will fill up the vacant posts in a few months as now we have a fully functional board,' Mr Ganesh said.
