Chennai: Even as common entrance test for medicos is just in the vicinity, the outdated syllabus that aspiring doctors are cramming in their lengthy years of education is in urgent need of revamp, feel experts.

"What is taught in the country's medical colleges is based on the 1857 syllabus in the London University. The MBBS syllabus needs to be overhauled at the earliest," said B.M. Hegde, an eminent medical educationist and renowned cardiologist.

Speaking at the seminar 'Medical Education and Research in India Since Independence', organised by the department of chemistry, IIT-Madras on Saturday, he said, "What is taught in the name of medicine is totally irrelevant to Indian conditions. Need-based education and community-based teaching should be given importance. We must opt for an integrated system of medicine".

Quoting from official records released by the US government he said that eight lakh deaths occur in that country due to adverse drug reactions (ADR) every year.
