Chennai: In response to a recent report in our publication, the Tamil Nadu government has earmarked Rs 383 crore for the admission fees of students in private schools, as mandated by the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act.

Under this legislation, 25 percent of seats in non-minority private self-financed schools are reserved for tuition-free admission to students in LKG or first grade.

The state government will directly provide these fees to the schools.

However, private schools had previously complained about the lack of funds for students enrolled in both the last academic year and the current one. In light of this, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has issued a notification to allocate funds to the schools.

Nagarajamurugan, Director of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Division, stated in a press release that a total of 65,946 students were enrolled under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act for the academic year 2022-23. Including students from previous years, the current enrollment stands at 4,17,068 students.

An allocation of Rs. 383.59 crore has been made to compensate schools for the education fees of the last academic year, with disbursement expected shortly.

For the ongoing academic year 2023-24, 70,553 children have been enrolled. The release indicates that steps will be taken to provide funds for this academic year in the next financial year, pending availability of central government allocations.
