Liberal arts are those subjects or skills that are considered essential for anyone to know in order to take an active part in normal civic life.

The aim of these studies is to produce a virtuous, knowledgeable, and articulate person. Grammar, rhetoric, and logic are the core liberal arts.

The objective of liberal studies is to train students to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving, and to imbue critical thinking with ethical thought.

Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree provides students with a solid multidisciplinary preparation in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and the Arts, subsequently allowing them to pursue careers in education, business, government, and other such fields.

In modern times, liberal arts education is a term that can be interpreted in different ways. It can refer to certain areas of literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics, psychology, and science. It can also refer to studies on a liberal arts degree program.

Institutions concentrate not only on academic subjects, but also on producing well-rounded individuals, so physical education and religion or ethics are compulsory.

Other academic areas that can be associated with the term liberal arts include:

Visual Arts
History
Languages
Linguistics
Literature
Mathematics
Music
Philosophy
Political science
Psychology
Religious studies
Natural Science
Social Science
Performing arts

Some of the finest liberal arts education institutes in India are St Stephens College (Delhi), Loyola College (Chennai), St Xaviers College (Kolkata), Presidency College (Kolkata).

Other private institutions that offer liberal art as part of their programmes are:

  • Ashoka University, Kundli NCR (Near New Delhi)
  • Apeejay Stya University, Sohna, Gurgaon
  • School Of Liberal Studies, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar, Gujarat
  • School of Liberal Education (SLE), Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women
  • Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME), Pune, India
  • Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata
  • Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts (Symbiosis International University), Pune.
  • Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities, O. P. Jindal Global University, Sonepat, Haryana

In India, with a steady rise in the number of institutions imparting education in the engineering, medical and management streams and the market for professional education becoming saturated, educationalists are now discovering an area ignored by the government and the private sector in the past.

Humanities and social sciences, an integral part of the liberal arts, is seeing comeback of sorts, with a number of philanthropists and educationalists investing in this segment.

It has been suggested that the liberal arts degree may soon become part of mainstream education provision across the globe and soon to be followed by India.
