Advanced Pharmaceutical studies at India's premier instituions - 6-Mar-2014

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) is the first national level institute offering advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences.  It is an autonomous body set up under the aegis of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the Government of India has declared NIPER as an 'Institute of National Importance' through an Act of Parliament.

Although the institute at Mohali is the oldest, the other instiutes begun functioning from the year 2007-2008.

With the President of India as a visitor, NIPERs function under the Union ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Its policy is framed and  reviewed by a board of governors which includes eminent academicians, members of the parliament and entrepreneurs. All the insitution has a director, who is also the chief academic and executive officer.

Further, the Department of Pharmaceuticals has envisaged an investment Rs 3,000 crore to set up ten more National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) over the next few years in to enhance availability of skilled human resources in the pharma sector.

National Bioinformatics Facility
Testing Lab for Stability and Impurity Profiling of Drugs
Central Instrumentation Laboratory
National Center for Safety Pharmacology

Admissions:

Basically, NIPERs offer Masters, MBA and PhD studies.

Every year in June and July NIPER conducts national level entrance examinations for admissions to its M.S. (Pharm) / M.Tech / M.Pharm.,  MBA(Pharm.) and  PhD programs.
 
Aspirants of MBA (Pharmaceutical Management) and candidates for doctoral programs are further screened through personal interview.

Candidates need to have qualified the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or now Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) in a suitable subject area, although exceptions are allowed for some applicants/programs.

For doctoral studies, normally candidates need obtain fellowship through sources like UGC/ CSIR / ICMR  to go through the research

studies, but in its absence a fellowship through National Eligibility Test conducted by the University Grants Commission or such student support schemes are makes the application strong.

Masters programs are of four semesters, while the doctoral programs typically take six to ten semesters depending on the subject area of research.

A scholar has to take a minimum number of credits offered from various departments depending on the program and branch of study. Research, its presentation, and defense carry their own credits reflected in the final Cumulative Graded Point Average (CGPA).
