Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPA) are a group of autonomous public institutes of higher education functioning under Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The SPAs are located at Bhopal, Delhi and Vijayawada.

Established with the objectives of providing quality Architecture and physical planning education, these centrally funded institutions primarily offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes.

Though all the SPA institution's administrations and overall strategies are carried out by an SPA council, each SPA is autonomous and exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations.

The SPA Council is headed by India's Minister of Human Resource Development and consists of the chairpersons and directors of all SPAs and senior officials from the MHRD.

Academics:

SPA offers educational programmes leading to the degree of Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.), Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan.) Master of Architecture (M. Arch.), Master of Planning (M. Plan) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.).

Programmes: 

UG: 
Bachelor of Architecture
Bachelor of Planning
Though UG in Architecture is a five-year programme, UG planning is four-year study.    

PG:
Master of Architecture in Architectural Conservation
Master of Architecture in Urban Design
Master in Industrial Design 
Master of Planning with specialization in Environmental Planning
Master of Planning with specialization in Housing
Master of Planning with specialization in Regional Planning
Master of Planning with specialization in Transport Planning
Master of Planning with specialization Urban Planning
Master of Building Engineering and Management
Master of Landscape Architecture

Though SPA, Delhi offers ten PG programmes, but other SPA's that are in Bhopal and Vijaywada offer much limited number of programmes only.   

Admission for UG:

Admissions to the under graduate programme is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, India. These are four and five year programmes
Even foreign nationals, non-resident Indians (NRIs) and persons of Indian origin (PIOs) candidates are eligible to apply and should have qualifications from the foreign boards/universities recognized as equivalent by the Association of  Indian Universities (AIU) to be shortlisted for further evaluations.

Admissions for PG:

For Master's Programme, an applicant can apply for maximum of two courses of studies in separate application forms with all enclosures along with each application and separate DDs for each course.

Photo copies of the certificates, mark sheets, etc. are to be attached with each application form. Candidate should not attach copy of Portfolio/Project/Summer Training, etc. Candidates should bring these documents in original at the time of Test/Interview.

Admission will be based on performance in the qualifying examination and/or GATE/CEED/UGC (JRF/NET)/Project/Portfolio, Statement of Purpose, Test or an Interview.

Admission for PhD:

Eligibility for PhD is Masters Degree in Architecture / Planning or equivalent with good academic record. Masters Degree in Technology and other relevant disciplines related with the built environment with basic degree in Architecture/Planning will also be eligible.

Candidates possessing the minimum qualifications and satisfying additional criteria set by the school will be called for an entrance test followed by an interview by the Selection Committee appointed by the Chairman, Academic Council.

Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the test and interview, the names of the candidates found suitable for admission to the Ph.D. programme will be finalized.
