Mr. Kalliappan, the Vice-chancellor of  Anna University., Tirunelveli, alleged that the university will start B.E.Geo Informatics Technology course from this Academic year.  Besides Chennai, Anna University has been established at three more cities, the recent one being at  Tirunelveli . It is currently running at the Government Engineering College premises. For the first time in the University B.E. Part-time courses are in progress at Kanyakumari and Tuticorin.

For the Academic year 2008-2009 admission for the full-time B.E. Courses will commence in August.

During the special interview given to the Dinamalar Reporter Mr.Kalliappan, the Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Tirunelveli said that students from Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari can join in this part-time B.E. courses and be benefited.

In India,  Tamilnadu has a good number of Engineering colleges. Most of these colleges are affiliated to Anna University.

As there are 252 colleges under one university, it was difficult to administer, streamline and maintain the quality of the college. Hence, the Anna University decided to have centers at Kovai, Trichy and Tirunelveli.

Under Anna University at Tirunelveli 42 colleges including Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Madurai are functioning.  Hence, monitoring of the colleges has become less problematic.

The Vice-Chancellor said that approval was not granted to a few colleges which have insufficient faculty. This problem was then solved by  the persons  concerned without delay. Nearly 13 colleges are waiting for recognition.

Most of the Engineering colleges have a sound infrastructure in order to obtain recognition from AICTE.  But at the same time they have a problem in appointing faculty. Only a few colleges under the control of Anna University, Tirunelveli, maintain standard, whereas the quality of other colleges is not commendable. One cannot find good standard colleges in the Souhern districts as found in Chennai. The main reason is that these districts are economically backward. Moreover, in Chennai excellent faculties are available. Even the handful of educated persons, belonging to the economically backward districts, is reluctant to work there. They seek  better jobs in Chennai and in other cities. "We will try to change the situation.  We intend to depute good faculty from Chennai to work in the Southern districts to improve the standard of the colleges," said the Vice-Chancellor.

"Geo-informatics Technology course will commence from this academic year at Anna University. As satellite statistics is indispensable we have sent a proposal seeking help.  In India, Anna University alone runs this course.  The students who complete this course will get jobs in Civil Engineering and in the field of Information Technology."  Mr.Kaliappan, the Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Tirunelveli, disclosed this.
