Vadodara: The Gujarat Government has invited proposals for making investment in new medical colleges in the state, Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said.

Vyas, who was here for a function, said the proposals in this regard would be cleared within ten days, adding, whoever is interested should seize this opportunity.

At least 15 new medical colleges are expected to come up in the state over the next couple of years, said Vyas.

"The government has decided to go ahead with its proposal to set up eight new medical colleges in the next couple of years," he said, adding that the state government would open these colleges on merits as emphasised by the chairman of Medical Council of India (MCI).

The Minister's reference to 'merit' came in response to a statement by MCI Chairman Dr S K Sarin who had said the approval of new colleges would be on merit.

Incidentally, MCI had rejected state's proposals for starting three new medical colleges in the 2010-11 academic year.

On many occasions, the Gujarat government had criticised the MCI and the union government for not approving proposals for new medical colleges in the state.
