Govt mulling changes in laws for FTII, SRFTI passouts to get degree- 15-Sep-2011
New Delhi: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is considering changes in the Acts that govern Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)and Satyajit Ray Film and Television institute (SRFTI) so that students get degrees rather than diplomas from there.
Officials said I & B Minister Ambika Soni had stressed that the convocation at SRFTI is also made an annual feature.
Soni is going to Kolkata for the convocation ceremony at SRFTI on Friday where she will also call on West Bengal chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
I & B ministry officials point out that Soni's visit to SRFTI was important as the government was considering declaring the SRFTI and FTII as institutes of national importance.
"Both the FTII and SRFTI are registered under the Societies Act. Though the academic standards at these institutes are quite high, the students get only a diploma on passing out," said a senior official.
"That diploma-holder students cannot pursue academics and higher education, the minister has taken note of it,"said a senior official.
The ministry plans to encourage the setting up of digital libraries, multi-utility auditoriums, production of films and the setting up of a centre for TV excellence is also on the cards, a senior I & B ministry official said.
"The government is trying to spruce up the human resource component, especially in film sector, and a series of discussions have taken place between the Planning Commission and the I & B ministry.
