Problem of copying lies deeper than thought!- 26-Nov-2017

In the backdrop of a student from Sathyabama committing suicide this week, the roots of copying lie much deeper than presumed.

The culture of copying starts right from school itself.  In the present condition, starting from high school to higher secondary, in all most all the schools, the teacher student ration is 1:50. With this over crowded classroom condition, students are in proximity that facilitates easy copying, without even being caught.

Slowly, this unnoticed habit flares up to become a culture.

Here, high student population in classes to be blamed!

Another threat is the shift in education paradigm from school level to higher education. At schools, 'rote learning methodology' is being adopted in the state. However, at the college, especially in engineering colleges, its more of 'analytical learning pattern' that is being followed. This shift in pattern puts enormous pressure on students, forcing, even the so called 'toppers' to even compromise on their integrity; pushing them into malpractices to make it through the semesters.

Over the years, with many engineering colleges cropping up across the state of Tamil Nadu, there is severe dearth in teaching fraternity. Quality teachers in colleges are a big question, especially in handling situations like this.

To add on, certain colleges in the name of providing good education function till late evening beyond regular working hours. Then, where is the time for students to study after a long travel back home traversing the city.

Its high time to enlighten students on malpractices such as copying from school level itself. First and foremost, its important to have a comfortable teacher student ratio, facilitating teachers to address malpractice issues with appropriate kindness and dexterity. Magnitude of being 'honest' needs to be emphasised to students right from school itself.

Present generation student-children are extremely impulsive. This attribute of impulsiveness also need to be addressed early through our education system, else suicidal incidents such as these aren't going to come to an end.

Although, many reasons could be the contributing factor for students to indulge in malpractices, but they need to be taught early, the goodness of being 'honest' not only towards 'copying' but in all spheres of life.
