The total seats available at the IIM, Kolkata are 304. In 2007, the girl students’ strength was 34, while in the previous year, 2006, it was 36. In the current year, 2008, it has further declined to 26. There is a steady fall in the admission of girl students at the Bangalore IIM.
This is a matter of concern. However, at the Lucknow IIM, the girl students’ strength has slightly improved. The last year strength was only 14 and this year it has increased to 30.
In Common Admission Test (CAT), a number of questions are analytical and in Mathematics. Hence, during the last few years more number of Engineering students, have passed the exam.
The officials of IIM, Kozhikode say that lesser number of engineering girl students take up CAT exam than those who study B.Sc., and B.A.
The IIM, Bangalore officials inform that the IIM admissions are based only on the performance of the CAT exams and the direct interview and not on the basis of gender.
Nevertheless, the officials have positive information to share with us that though less number of girl students take up CAT exams, they do extremely well in the interviews after their success in the CAT exams.
