Faculty presentations on "Reunion Day" at IIT Madras- 16-Jan-2014
Chennnai: While reunions are normally a time to wallow in nostalgia, the recent alumni gathering at IIT Madras also served as a forum to highlight the Institute’s transformation into a world-class research campus where faculty and students are engaged in path-breaking research with high societal impact.
Combining fun with facts, "Reunion Day" served up large dollops of camaraderie along with content of high technology in service of humanity.
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala described a vision of homes powered 24X7 by solar/DC. Prof. Devdas Menon described a rapid-construction low-cost construction technology utilizing glass-fiber reinforced gypsum (GFRG). Prof. Mohanasankar presented exciting and novel healthcare technologies being delivered through his Healthcare Technology Innovation Center (HTIC) located at IIT Madras Research Park. Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam presented the elements of the entrepreneurship/ incubation ecosystem taking shape on campus. Prof. Harishankar Ramachandran described the "IITM Satellite Project", an interdisciplinary effort involving many students and faculty to launch a satellite with a very unique payload—a possible predictor for earthquakes! These talks opened the eyes of those present to fundamental and translational research ongoing at IIT Madras with the potential for global impact albeit with a national bias.
Institute development, both in terms of alumni relations and financial resources needed to meet aspirations, is a focus area for the Office of International & Alumni Relations (I & AR) at IIT Madras.
Prof. Nagarajan, Dean of I & AR, was happy to announce that 2013 had been a year of continuing upsurge in alumni relations, with many campus visits, lectures and Events.
In his concluding address, the Director, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, touched upon many aspects of IIT Madras’ growth and fielded questions from the audience.
