Chennai: The University of Cambridge has announced that Ritu Muralidharan of Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai has received one of this year’s Undergraduate Scholarship awards for Indian students.

The scholarships are funded by Cambridge Assessment, the parent organisation of Cambridge International Examinations.

The Manmohan Singh Undergraduate Scholarship programme, established in 2009, will provide full funding, covering fees and means-tested maintenance for undergraduate study at the University of Cambridge. Ritu has been provisionally accepted to read Economics at Christ’s College. The place offered by the University of Cambridge is conditional on the student achieving specific grades.

Ritu said that the scholarship will enable her to develop her academic skills in order to help India: "I cannot wait to begin my next three years at Cambridge, and make the most of all the endless opportunities lying ahead of me! There is no better place where I can translate my passion for Economics into a force capable of nurturing meaningful social change in my country. When I applied for the Dr Manmohan Singh Undergraduate Scholarship, I didn't imagine that I would actually get it. Receiving it is such an amazing honour, and I am so grateful to my school, family and friends for their constant support and feedback."

William Bickerdike, Regional Director (South Asia), Cambridge International Examinations, said: “I’m deligAhted that Ritu, an outstanding Cambridge student, has achieved this great opportunity to study at one of the world’s top universities. At Cambridge our qualifications are designed to help learners like Ritu, not only get into university but will also empower them to get on - at university, and in life and employment beyond. We wish Ritu every success for the future.”

The Undergraduate Scholarships  are administered by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, a charity established by the University of Cambridge. They were launched with gifts from Sir Evelyn and Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild through the Eranda Foundation, and from the Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal-led company, Bharti Airtel (through the Bharti Foundation). The fund is underpinned by substantial funding through Cambridge Assessment, a department of the University and the parent Cambridge International Examinations.

338 schools in India offer Cambridge programmes and qualifications, including Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS and A Levels.
