To bring forth quality Engineers!- 22-Jul-2015

Today, situation in schools is such that, 'Memorizing the entire book and writing the answers is enough. Need not study with understanding. In college too, students follow the same methodology. Situation like this should change. Instead of memorizing or rote learning, practical learning should be given more emphasis'.

Text book and exam is mere yardstick to measure knowledge.  Engineering studies is highly creative by itself. Beyond having bookish knowledge in Engineering, understating through practical is more.

Ten years ago we went in search of phones to make calls, but today we have a phone in everyone’s pocket.  Likewise, having insight to understand what would be the requirement after ten years and bringing out such as creation is the mark of a good Engineer.

Become Entrepreneurs: Engineers should not wait for job opportunities or companies to offer jobs. Become a good entrepreneur by finding out something new, market it to the people and successfully taking it to the people at large.  If an individual student cannot do it, join together as group of five and can accomplish it.

Today, government as well as banks provides lot good schemes and offers to encourage entrepreneurship. Educational institutions should provide enough understanding to the students regarding this. Need to conduct special seminars on how to start a business entrepreneurship providing information on minute details such as  what are things to do to start an enterprise; needed paper work to be done; the financial investment required; and so on. ‘Network’ programmes also need to be conducted for all the students in their respective area of specialization.

Research centre of international standard:  According to the university’s guidelines, all the Engineering colleges have set up research laboratories. But, that is not enough. For students interestingly pursue engineering studies that naturally comprises more of practical work, need a state of art research laboratory with the latest equipments that is of international standard. It should contain the latest technology across the globe.

If a mechanical student steps inside, he should find all the mechanical devices across the country in the laboratory. It is impossible for a private institution to set up such big research lab. And it is not possible for all the colleges too. Consequently, Anna University in association with the state government should set up such a huge laboratory.

A new scheme should be brought into practice that every engineering student in Tamil Nadu should undergo a week training here at this colossal laboratory for which a nominal charge could be collected from the students. By establishing such a big research laboratory like this in Tamil Nadu, the quality of Engineering graduates will improve.  Through this venture, unquestionably, it would be possible to bring out good quality engineers in Tamil Nadu.
