JIPMER, Pondicherry is a prominent educational institution in medicine at the national level.
JIPMER was started in the year 1823, in the name of Echole De Medicine De Pondicherry by the French Government in Pondicherry. After the Indian government took over in the year 1956 its standard was improved. From 1964 it has been called Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Education and Research (JIPMER) functioning under the direct control of Union Ministry for Health and Family welfare. Apart from providing good medical service, it also offers various different medical studies.
JIPMER Hospital: JIPMER hospital is situated in a land spreading across 95 acres. It provides allopathy treatment to all sorts of diseases and mental illness. In addition, it also provides tests and diagnosis using latest facilities to the patients at free of cost.
Every day, more than 4000 patients not only from Pondicherry, also from neighboring states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra come here for treatment. The hospital comprises of 860 beds, with 497 doctors 578 nurses working in it, equipped with a blood bank and latest gadgets like CT scan that could examine the entire body.
Education: 154 experienced faculties are working in this educational institution that is recognized under the Pondicherry University. Every year JIPMER hosts several discussions, seminars, technical trainings and training classes. Further, it conducts latest medicine and researches related to health, medical and paramedical courses.
Students studying in this institution have numerous opportunities to work in the same hospital itself. The admission to MBBS course is merit based. Every year, JIPMER conducts common entrance examination at the all India level in the second week of June.
Eligibility for entrance examination: Should have completed 17 years of age as on the 1st of June. Should have obtained 50% in English and 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in plus two.
