HC to WB Govt: Make stand clear on teachers' appointment- 16-Feb-2017
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court sought clarifications from the West Bengal government on allegations of discrepancies in the appointment of primary school teachers for which 23 lakh candidates had appeared in the examinations.
Observing that the allegations were serious in nature, Justice Arijit Banerjee directed the state education department to submit an affidavit clarifying allegations of discrepancies and illegal acts in the process of appointment within four weeks.
The court directed the petitioners to file an affidavit in reply to the state's affidavit within another two weeks, following which the matter would be heard again.
Justice Banerjee directed that in the meantime, the process of appointment may continue, but such appointments would be subject to the final outcome of the petitions before the court.
At least 23 lakh candidates appeared for the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) for 42,000 vacancies in primary schools spread across the state.
More than 20 petitions by around 100 candidates were moved before the high court alleging malpractice in the appointment process.
