Kolkata: United States India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has decided to invest Rupees 6.7 million in the 2010-11 session to strengthen ties between the two countries through education initiatives.
Executive Director USIEF Adam Grosky, while addressing a gathering to mark the 60 years of the organisation, said yesterday Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US President Barrack Obama had decided to invest 6.7 million for the initiative, which is three times higher than the previous year.
The decision was reached in a meeting in Washinton DC last year. USIEF, established under the bilateral agreement on educational exchange programme of 1950, aims at promoting mutual understanding through the educational exchange programme of outstanding scholars, professionals and students.
The foundation award scholarships to meritorious students from various acedemic disciplines pursuing higher education.
Some of the prominent programmes of the organisation include Fullbright-Nehru Doctoral Professional Research Fellowship, Full-Bright Senior Research Fellowship and post Doctoral programme for one year in various disiplines including climate change, business journalism and others.
Speaking on the student strength, the executive said in 2009-10, 89 students were sent to the US under various programmes and in the coming session about 140 students are expected to follow suit.
The students sent to the US were high on acedemic capability, had good leadershipship skills and made good brand ambassadors, Mr Grosky added.
