Panjab varsity may get more grants from Centre- 15-Feb-2010
New Delhi: Panjab University in Chandigarh, which has been facing financial difficulties for the last few years, could expect more grants from the Centre.
The HRD Ministry has set up a committee to examine the scope for more funds flow to the Panjab University whose expenses are managed by the Centre and the State in the 60-40 ratio, according to an official order.
The University was established under the University Act, 1947 and later became the inter-state body corporate under the Punjab Re-organization Act, 1966.
As per this Act, the maintenance grant to the University was shared by the states concerned like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigargh Union territory.
However, other states withdrew from the arrangement. The Expenses of the University are manged by the Punjab government and the Union territory administration of Chandigarh.
The share of the union territory is provided in the budget of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Since the University is facing problem in managing its financial affairs, the HRD Ministry has constituted a Consultative Committee to re-examine the 60-40 ratio for sharing of fund between the Centre and the state for that University.
The eight member committee is headed by Joint-Secretary, Higher Education in the Ministry. The committee will also determine the optimum mechanism for funding the Panjab University which is facing financial crisis due to implementation of the revised pay scale as per the Sixth Pay Commission.
