New Delhi: To ensure de-congestion of roads for smooth conduct of the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Government today decided to close city schools during the prestigious sporting event to be held here from October 3 to 14.

Announcing the decision after a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the holiday period around Dusshera, which is falling on October 17, has been rescheduled so that schools are closed during the event which will help in overcoming traffic congestion.

Dikshit said it has been decided to increase the autumn break from eight to 17 days. The autumn break for current academic year will be from October one to 17 instead of earlier schedule of October 13 to 20. She said the rescheduling of the holidays will also help students enjoy the mega sporting event. Officials said private schools will also be asked to keep their institutions closed during the event.

To adjust the extended autumn break, the government has decided to reduce the summer vacation holidays from 61 days to 49 days. As per the new schedule, the total number of working days in 2010-11 would be 218 days against total number of 215 working days in 2009-10. Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the winter vacation will be from December 25 to January nine, 2011.
