Even from the days of sovereignty, Gems, the rare type of stones had been identified as the symbol of wealth.  The practice was to adorn the deities in the temples with Gems.

Generally,  Gemology related studies are short term courses.  Since the books on Gemmology are in English language and the interaction and communication necessitate English language skill,  it is essential to have this skill to do well in this field.

Further, those who want to be in this field must have good designing capacity and also deep commitment to maintain quality.  Moreover, a very good observation power, coordination between eyes and hands, the knack to absorb the details,  propensity to patient concentration are added essentials.

The Gemologists in the research labs test the unshaped and the uncut gems through  the microscope and other latest tools. For these skilled professionals, job opportunities are ever ready in the field of ornamental jewellery.  The potential Gemologists get chances to conduct trade in their work-place itself.

Those in this field are self-employed or work in big organizations.  Jobs such as jewellery purchasers, appraisers, Research Gemologists, experts in the auction centres and retail jewellery traders are available for these professionals.

The Gemologists aver that the future of men can be wonderfully constructed with the help of the zodiac stones and the future of these Gemologists remains significantly very good.  There are more than 3000 natural rare stones now used  in ornamental jewellery, in accordance to the ramification of time.  In India, for the past 10 to 15 years the scope for the field of Gemology has been tremendously enlarged.

The workers in this field can work as a part of famous  jewellery shops.  They can also serve as testers to decide and certify the quality of the Gems sold in that shop.  There are also many opportunities and jobs  to grade the gems in terms of their colour, quality and cut-shape.  In this century,  enough openings are availble in the field of Indian Gems and ornamental jewellery. It could be seen that the experts in this field have not only good opportunities but also global recognition.

The artistic designers can earn Rs,15,000/- even from the commencement of their job.  Good wages are possible according to the expertise and experience.  We also see that those who join this field abroad receive more than Rs.20,000/- as salary.
