This exam has been conducted by the AAMC from the year 1928.  Admission to Postgraduate studies in most American medical schools is carried out based on the scores obtained in this exam.  Roughly over 80,00 candidates take up this exam every year.

Students admission is carried out based on MCAT scores in programmes like Doctor of Medicine ; Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine ; Doctor of Physical Medicine or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine ; and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. 

The computer based test, is a multiple-choice exam designed to assess your problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioral, and
social science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine covering four sections:

Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems - 95 mins
Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems - 95 min
Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior - 95 min
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills - 90 min

With breaks in between each session, the total time for the exam is 7 hours 30 mins including for certificate verification.

There are testing limits on how many times you can take the MCAT exam.

Single testing year:
The MCAT exam can be taken up to three times.

Two consecutive-year period:
The MCAT exam can be taken up to four times.

Lifetime:
The MCAT exam can be taken up to seven times in a lifetime.

MCAT scores are valid for 2 to 3 years.
