Hearing ability is indispensable to learn and speak a language  Audiology is the study about hearing deficiency. It assesses the deficiency of hearing impaired patients and restores them back to normal life. Children, in general, seem to be affected by this.  This treatment is given to adults who face speech disbility caused by accidents, psychological problems and ailment.

The Audiologists help adults who cannot hear, speak, mumble, stammer and pronounce words due to speech impediment and children who have problems in uttering a word.

They help those who are unable to make speech sounds or make the sound clearly.  The audiologists use audiometer. With the help of this instrument, they assess the amount of loud sound the patients can hear, and their ability to discriminate sounds. They, thus, judge the degree and severity of the impairment. After correlating it with the patients personal and psychological problems, they decide the course of treatment.

They use special equipments to conduct speech tests and record their impairment.  They also teach sign language to persons who have completely lost their hearing ability. To others they educate to make, improve and communicate sounds.

They also advise the  patients about the treatment and also their family members as to how to approach the patients according to the treatment given to them.   Audiologists and Speech and Language Therapists give treatment  to patients with specific  problems, especially persons with neurological disorder and patients with hearing impairment and learning deficiency . 

The subjects taught in Audiology, Speech and Language Therapy are Speech Pattern, Pathology, Hearing Aid Therapeutics, Phonetics, Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Neurology, Audiology, Physics of Sound, Disease of Ear, Nose and Throat.  Practical Training is also assured.  The learners must initially observe the patients during treatment, then assist the Therapists while giving treatment.

Opportunities are available for the Audiologists and Speech and Language Therapists in Hospitals, Physically Handicapped Centers run by the Social Welfare Department   They can also run their own clinics.   Big Industries employ them to monitor noise pollution.  Those who have obtained PG degree in this field can become a teacher, an assessor or an administrator.
